Proud Momma

Just got back from the Missoula Children's Theatre production of Robin Hood that our kids were in. All week long a group of about 50 kids worked like crazy, and ended the week with two performances today. They all did awesome jobs and the play was great fun. I was so proud of them and the hard work they put into it.

It's really fun to see your kids in a different environment than usual. It has a way of pointing out strengths that you don't necessarily notice in normal life. Granted, in normal life, you're not up on stage wearing a fancy outfit, and I think their lives would be unbalanced if they did this tons.

But when you're a homeschooling mom, you tend to hear the 'what about socialization?' question a lot. And even when you're utterly convinced you're making a choice that serves your children well, hearing that question can wear on you and leave you with just the tiniest niggling doubt. (There's a lot of self-doubt in motherhood, isn't there?)

So seeing my kids up on stage, belting out lines fearlessly and with flair, was ever-so-reassuring to my momma-heart. Yes, they're getting educated. Yes, we're avoiding some of the negative stuff that sometimes accompanies public schooling. But we're also raising kids who can work well with others, and who are brave enough to put themselves out there in front of others on occasion-- they even enjoy it. Yeah, the socialization is going just fine, thank-you-very-much!

Kudos! They look wonderful, and I am sure did a great job. It is good to have our doubts eradicated and our choices affirmed, isn't it? I am so glad when God gives my own three opportunities to shine. It warms the mama's heart and eases those nagging doubts. You ARE doing great things with and for your children. Keep on keepin' on!!

I was homeschooled too, as a matter of fact -- and I turned out socially "normal". ;)

people ask you about their social skills? i'd just remind them of how many you got! they have more practice at socialization than most kids do!

Our theatre group did Robin Hood--a musical version! It was great fun. Your kids look so happy!

I started a post this weekend about having my kids in theater and how great it's been for our family. I hope to get it up later today or tomorrow. We have dress rehearsals and then performances--7 total--this week (and 2 more next week) of ANNIE.
Busy, busy--but so worth it!
