Ack, What An Evening.

Wild evening... First of all, this evening two blog friends became IRL (in real life) friends. I don't want to say who they are without their permission. But we unexpectedly crossed paths today-- SMALL WORLD-- and they are both adorable, as I knew they would be, and I'm looking forward to getting together with them again sometime. WHAT FUN!

The niceness of that meeting was unfortunately overshadowed by a very un-nice thing. Tonight at a ball game while up to bat, my 14 year old caught a wild pitch with his face, and broke his jaw. Spent a couple hours at the all-too-familiar Quick Care, which we decided should more truthfully be called "Eventually Care." (maybe ya had to be there, but it was funny at the time).

Got a bunch of x-rays, which we need to pick up and cart over to the oral surgeon's office tomorrow to find out if they are going wire his jaw shut or do surgery, or just let it heal...ack...

Till then he is on a liquid diet. So, late this evening I was cruising the aisles of Walmart trying to imagine what I could FEED my always-ravenous 14 year old that could fit through a straw! Shakes, V-8, more shakes, smoothies, more shakes...please, someone who's done this before please give me some good ideas?

And if you are so inclined, please pray for my son? He is very swollen and in a lot of pain. But mostly he's incredibly bummed as this means the end of his baseball season-- a highlight in his young life... Oh, I'm feeling sad for him, and bad that I griped about baseball before... Darn...

Oh I am sorry to hear about your son - and I will be praying for him that the Lord will ease his pain and heal him soon. My brother in law had jaw surgery and his jaw was wired shut. During his recovery he ate everything - I mean everything - through a straw. His wife put everything in a blender and he sucked it up through the straw - chicken dinners and even lemon pie...a bit gross to watch but he said it tasted fine.
I hope your boy is feeling better soon.

Oh Mary, I will be praying for your son. My mom was on an all liquid diet and used the heck out of her Vita Mix blender. They have some great recipes on their site: http://vitamix.ahoy.com/recipe/recipe_search.cgi
and you could probably try some with a regular blender. Good luck and hope it heals fast.

Poor boy. You've got my prayers this morning!

My husband was in an automobile accident years ago and had his jaw wired shut for eight weeks.

We did all the usual things--milkshakes, Ensure, etc. but he got hungry for "Real food."

I ended up putting all sorts of things through the food processor--roast beef and mashed potatoes and gravy thinned with broth, all kinds of hearty soups, even Mexican food.

Believe it or not, he said it was better than an never ending diet of shakes.

Oh I am so sorry for your son! Tell him I will be praying for a quick recovery and a lessing of the pain. What a bummer, as baseball season has just started. He did so well at the last game you posted about too! Darn! I wish I could do more. But since I am just in the computer to you, please let him know I am praying for him.

Oh man that is just awful! My nephew at around the same age did something similar (he has a titanium plate in his cheek now)- lots of food goes through the blender... The good thing about their age is that they bounce back quickly.

I had my jaw broken (with a full beer bottle). Had plastics cover the scars, that didn't bother me. Having my jaw wired shut hurt like wildfire...
What saved me was strawberry banana shakes (with a little wheat germ and flax seed thrown in). They're filling and sweet. AND you can crunch pains into them.
And MASHED POTATOES!! Thank God for mashed potatoes....
Will pray for you and your son.

Owl! I am so sorry to hear about your boy. Having survived 3 boys (so far) I can't imagine one of them at 14 not being able to eat, since that seems to be the main focus at that age. Perhaps some protein powder to help beef up the shakes? Even Walmart sells that stuff. I bet he isn't getting enough fiber either, some of the fiber stuff mixes into water or juice. Prayers that all goes well and the healing is complete. Prayers for you too mama.

So sorry to hear about your son hurt doing something he loves! It's hard to give up food and baseball at the same time. I agree with the other commenters that most eveything goes well in the blender, just looks awful.
Sending prayers for a speedy recovery!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that :(

This just has to be so hard for him and you too. Will definitely keep him in my prayers.

My stepmom once had her jaw wired shut and also could only have liquids.
She did have soups and shakes and smoothies. But I think she loved soups the most :)

Will keep you all in my prayers, and I hope he gets better real soon :)

Oh what a horrible thing. And scary! A friend of mine's daught was hit in the throat by a foul ball at a baseball game last summer. They all feel a little nervous whenever they go to ball games now. How long will your son have to be on a liquid diet?

I'm so sorry! I will pray for him, too.

Odwalla juice. I don't know if Wal-Mart carries it, but they might. It's packed with nutrition and very tasty.

I'm so sorry this happened. Heal quickly, Slugger!

Oh thats terrible. Sorry to hear that this happened. I will pray for him. Hope all goes well during the whole healing time.
Someday he'll look back on this and have stories to tell his kids.

Mary, I'm so sorry to hear about your son! What a rotten thing to have happen. Best wishes and I hope he heals soon.

No experience with this, but can he eat soup? Vichyssoise and gazpacho are normally served cold, but I imagine any soup could be pureed...

Sounds like y'all might be on a first-name basis with the triage people in the ER--we were when our kids were little. Hope you get good news from the dr.
Some things you can try: baby food (warm it up thoroughly); Get one of those grinders that will grind meat very fine (finer than hamburger), and mix with plenty of savory broth; Try a juicer, and add protein powder. We tried all of these, plus lots of mashed potatoes mixed with any or all of the above, and protein powder shakes. Add flax seed oil, or any kind of oil he finds palatable, since the fat will keep him more satisfied than just protein and carbs.
Praying for all of you.

Bless his heart! Hurt, can't eat, AND no more baseball this season! Poor guy.
If he likes cream of wheat, thin it with milk enough to get it through a straw. Pulse cooked oatmeal a few times and thin with milk or water, too. Almost anything can be thinned with milk, water juice or broth and blended. Just experiment, and make sure he has a multivitamin daily, too. You may have to blend it in something he eats to get it down him, according to how much space they allow him between his teeth, if any.
Also, those ridged reusablestraws that come in some of the plastic mugs and water bottles, and also the the ones from McDonald's are bigger than usual, so they don't clog as easily as smaller ones.
I'm praying, Mary. Please keep us posted as to how he's doing. :)
