Works For Me

Playing Works For Me Wednesday with Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer again. This week's idea is a simple thing. For the longest time I have hated my colanders. It seemed they were always either tipping over, letting all the spaghetti slop into the sink. Or I would have that dreaded drain backup problem-- you know, when the disposal hasn't been run and the water backs up into the sink....and into your pasta. Yech.... (Please tell me it's not only me who has this problem!)

Anyway, I finally got fed up a few months ago and went on a colander hunt. I found this beauty for $15 at Walmart. The colander is huge--a plus for my family! It is suspended at the top edge of the sink with sturdy arms. The arms are adjustable to fit varying sizes of sinks, and the whole thing is very stable. You don't even have to totally empty the sink of dishes because it sits so high. Works for me!!

Dang! Why don't we have walmart?!
I, too, have had to fish spaghetti out of the sink on too many times.....

What an awesome kitchen gadget...I really need to find one here. I will start my hunt today!! And you are not the only one that the water backs up into the pasta. We don't have a disposal, but sometimes our drain backs up, not nice when draining pasta!!

Awesome! I'd run out and get one of these but my husband spent way too much money on an Allclad strainer and he might not like the idea. Great tip though!

I've posted a WFMW idea as well. Stop by and take a peek! :)

What a useful tip-- I hate that feeling when the pasta's done, and you look in your sink to find it full of dirt dishes. Ugh! Thanks for the idea.

That is a great idea! I need that! I hate having my pasta spill out of my colander!

I've been lusting after that colander since I spotted it at Walmart last year.
It's everything I imagined it would be, isn't it? So I really should just suck it up and shell out the $15? And I should have done it last year. I could have saved $15 worth of pasta by now and I'd be using the collander guilt-free from now on.

I like your collander for the dreaded dirty-dishes-in-the-sink-while-cooking syndrome, which too often afflicts our home as well.

One eve...I sat down to enjoy a spaghetti dinner lovingly fixed by one of my dear children, as I am well into it I am told "ah, mom, a lot of the spaghetti went down in the garbage disposal, but I fished it out and did rinse it off."

Thankfully? the garbage disposal had previously been run and there were no other competing food items.

I showed the child were we kept the collander.

I didn't have seconds.

But, it was delightful until I knew the little secret.

Cindy,
The things we do for love. Like eating the stale crackers they fish out of their pockets and lovingly offer us. Though I think the crackers are sounding better now that I've heard about your spaghetti dinner.

Kim C-- Run get it! With your family, I promise you will love it. It fits 16 servings of pasta. No mere mortal strainer will do that!

I found the same colander a couple of years ago, and it is my trusty sidekick. I have given a number of them away at wedding showers as well. Great idea.

Nice one. I hate it when the water gets backed up while draining.

Cool colander- now I know what my sister-in-law can bring me back from the States!

I like yours because it's so big! Whenever I cook spaghetti, it always overflows the colander when I drain it.

I love it!! I'm going to ask my mom to look for one, and bring it over when she comes for a visit!

Thanks!
Blessings!

What impressed me most about this photo is that there were no dishes in the sink! Eight kids, and no dishes in the sink! We have a dishwasher *and* several dish washers, and we always have dishes in the sink...

Oh, and it's a very nice colander, too. ;)

Ooo. I love that one! Sadly, my favorite part is the "don't have to move the dishes" part. :)
